眼睛结膜下脂肪膨出的起因是由于眼睛结膜与巩膜的黏合退化，而造成眼框内的脂肪往前鼓出，与人体腹腔的疝气成因相似。因为许多患者觉得结膜下脂肪外露影响外观，而且会有异物感，有时还会造成结膜下出血而造成病患困扰，所以医师可以采取外科手术的方式先将膨出的脂肪移除，再将结膜与巩膜烧灼黏结，最后将结膜外表缝合以避免眼框内的脂肪再度往前鼓出。
