This procedure was performed to facilitate removal of blood filling the middle ear following a skull base fracture involving the the temporal bone. Patient complaints of having reduced hearing, blocked ear sensation, and headache. A small linear cut (myringotomy) was done followed by suction clearance of the trapped blood beyond the eardrum. The myringotomy cut heals spontaneously over time as evidenced by repeat ear endoscopy 3 weeks later. Blood was not seen in the nasopharynx implicating a non-draining haemotympanum. The other ear was found to be normal. |
