This patient had a particular impaction fracture of the fifth metatarsal from an ankle inversion sprain while playing basketball.  More common is a fifth metatarsal base fracture (Jones Fracture) from the stress on this bone from the peroneal tendon, but the type of direct impact on the side of his foot created a comminuted (more than one break) fracture of the metatarsal diaphysis.
