This patient presented with progressive dysmenorrhea and was found to have Stage II Endometriosis. In this setting, white blood cells (WBC) called macrophages are drawn to the area where they express caustic white blood cell chemicals, called "cytokines" in an effort to dissolve the endometriosis implants.
Notice the peritoneal rents and phimotic fimbriae this "chemical hot bath" causes as the chemicals chronically bathe these organs.
If the white blood cells never complete the task of clearing the endometriosis, the WBCs remain in the pelvis. The harsh chemicals they produce can damage eggs and sperm, making fertilization more difficult.
At the conclusion of the surgery, Interceed Surgical Adhesion Barrier is wrapped around the fallopian tubes and ovaries to help reduce adhesion formation. This product will naturally dissolve within 2 weeks. |
